The Scene

"True to its name, Nacional 27 brings to Chicago a little bit of flavor from all twenty-seven countries in Latin America, drawing a diverse crowd of trendy, fun-loving partygoers eager to follow the venue's motto of ""Eat."

True to its name, Nacional 27 brings to Chicago a little bit of flavor from all twenty-seven countries in Latin America, drawing a diverse crowd of trendy, fun-loving partygoers eager to follow the venue’s motto of “Eat. Drink. Dance.”

Somewhat removed from the loud and rowdy club scene of nearby Hubbard Street, this upscale restaurant fills with lively Latin music from the moment its doors open, as stylish work colleagues crowd the central bar for passion colada mojitos and well-dressed girlfriends gather in sleek banquettes to work their way through pitchers of sangria.

In the early evening, affluent families and couples drop by the adjacent round dining room to sample selections from the enticing menu, which includes everything from ceviche to roast suckling pig.

Thursday nights, meanwhile, draw adventurous college kids and daters looking to take advantage of the free salsa lessons, while Fridays and Saturdays see an overflow crowd of upbeat partners and veteran dancers shaking it to the DJ’s spicy beats until closing time.

Lively and easygoing, Nacional 27 offers a complete night of dining, drinking, and dancing with a decidedly Latin flair.

Nacional 27 (River North)

Nacional 27 is a Spanish fusion restaurant located in Chicago's Near North Neighborhood. The menu infuses cooking styles and ingredients from the 27 countries comprising Central and South America and the Latino Caribbean islands. If you love tapas, empanadas, steak, tiny tacos, ceviches and seafood Nacional 27 may be your new favorite spot. The drink and wine selection is phenomenal as well, I enjoyed a Manhattan (single malt bourbon, punt e mas and bitters). Aside from the wonderful food and drink, the atmosphere at the restaurant is exuberant. The music is flowing and the waiters are hospitable. Prices are reasonable and the portions seem small but are surprisingly filling. I ordered the succulent Shrimp Adobedo Skewer for my appetizer, with a sweet and savory salsa. I was extremely satisfied with the buttery and flavorful Mahi Mahi Tacos, on a bed of beans and rice for the main course. Nacional 27 transforms into Club 27 on Friday and Saturday nights, offering great music and dancing. This venu would be ideal for any party. I can’t wait to return to try the salmon and sample tapas with some friends. My waitress’ name was Erica, I would recommend her she is very personable and gave awesome suggestions… She had great energy!
Drinks and dancing in the west loop

Nacional 27 is a pretty cool spot. First of all, their selection of mojitos is amazing and makes it incredibly difficult to choose. Luckily, they offer a "flight" of mojitos, so you can try small versions of 3 different types and savor the full variety of flavors! As for the dancing, it's pretty great. I went earlier on a Thursday, and they were having a salsa lesson! I just watched, but I thought it was pretty cool that they offer dance lessons. Afterwards, they turn the music on and let anyone who wants to dance on their own. Apparently on Saturdays they do something similar, and then it's dancing all night long! I'm looking forward to going back for a night of salsa dancing. I think my favorite thing is that Nacional 27 has the appearance of a swanky and upscale bar/restaurant, but the clientele is pretty diverse. So even if you are not interested in spending a ton of money or donning a fancy dress, you can put on a casual dancing outfit and enjoy a night of dancing without feeling embarrassed!
Salsa in the City

Looking for a chance to dance? Well, follow my lead to Nacional 27. A circular dance floor in the middle of the restaurant plays stage to free salsa lessons on Thursday nights. Within thirty to forty minutes, you will learn the basics of salsa and all for the price of free! Word of recommendation: bring a friend or significant other as you'll need a "leader" and a "follower" to show off your newly acquired moves.
