Chicago Plays Overview
Plays in Chicago can be serious business, and renowned theaters like the Steppenwolf and the Goodman attract the field’s most renowned names. They tend to stage well-known but challenging shows from playwrights like August Wilson and Eugene O’Neill. On a more accessible scale, the Goodman presents the city’s most popular version of The Christmas Carol every year. The Steppenwolf was co-founded by Gary Sinise and has regular members such as John Malkovich, and their plays often have star power. The Lookingglass Theatre, co-founded by David Schwimmer, tends to put on more whimsical or artistic performances but draws a similar crowd of serious theater lovers.
Chicago plays sit at the other end of the spectrum too, in storefront and experimental theaters that serve as the city’s version of Off-Off Broadway. Lower rents in Chicago’s neighborhoods let rabble-rousing, scrappy ensembles push boundaries without taking themselves too seriously. A long-running production of Sock Puppet Showgirls, for example, proved that the camp classic Showgirls could be staged with a cast of sock puppets. Some of these ensembles have a more dignified and established presence, such as the Black Ensemble Theater and the Victory Gardens Theater; the latter is housed in the historic Biograph Theater where John Dillinger met his end. Other plays might be a group of broke but talented friends putting on an avant-garde performance in a shifty-looking space.
