In Chicago, the street named Broadway is a run-of-the-mill neighborhood thoroughfare, but that doesn’t mean that the bright lights of the mythical Broadway don’t reach here. Broadway musicals usually have their big debuts in New York, but many of them first had trial runs in Chicago. Previews of shows like Wicked and Spamalot gave musical lovers here special productions before the rest of the world got a chance. Trial run or not, most of the major Broadway shows end up playing here with touring casts. Musicals in Chicago do not skimp on the spectacle and showmanship that their NYC and London counterparts have perfected. And, luckily, Chicago musicals are often less expensive, which is great news for former drama club nerds on a budget.
The Loop’s theater district holds several ornate old theaters like the Oriental Theatre and the Cadillac Palace. All the major players, like Les Miserables, Rent, and The Lion King, receive extended runs here, and dozens of the lesser-known Broadway shows are presented every year. Locals can take advantage of ticket packages offered by Broadway in Chicago, and everyone can try their luck at same-day cheap seats. And it has not been proven, but perhaps the musical Chicago is best viewed in Chicago.
