S.P.A.C.E. (Evanston, IL) Information

S.P.A.C.E. (Evanston, IL) - Concert Venue in Chicago.

The full name of S.P.A.C.E. – Society for the Preservation of Art & Culture in Evanston – is a mouthful, but it sums up the venue’s mission. Most shows at S.P.A.C.E. are musical acts that value high sound fidelity and an intimate audience appearance. The theater was designed with acoustics in mind, and no seat is more than 40 feet away from the stage.

The S.P.A.C.E. space opened in 2008 and features the theater, the Union pizzeria, and a rehearsal/recording hang-out for fee-paying members and performers. Concerts at S.P.A.C.E. include national acts in blues, jazz, rock, folk, country, world, and classical music. The small 250-capacity theater has hosted names like Loudon Wainwright, Rhett Miller, and Todd Rundgren. Shows start earlier than most city concerts – 8 pm is a common time – catering to the crowd of ex-hipsters who have moved to the suburbs but still want to hear amazing musicians. S.P.A.C.E. has a general policy of politeness and reserve, as the audience is there to really appreciate the performance. Seating is general admission, though tables can be reserved. Pizza and beer from the restaurant at S.P.A.C.E. can be brought into the theater, and the room itself has a full bar.

Cute and classic music space

I was pleasantly surprised by this music space. It is a small, intimate room with cool modern and decorative fixtures. There are reserved tables in the center, but plenty of space to enjoy the artists while standing in the back/sides of the room. I love small venues like this, where the artists and fans have an opportunity to catch during and post shows.
Chicago Farmer 02/16/13

Sharing the stage for an intimate acoustic night at S.P.A.C.E. was Chicago Farmer, Old Shoe, and Mike Musikanto. Although some patrons were puzzled about the small stage, I personally preferred the close and friendly environment that the crowd created. When the crowd was beyond warmed up, by Musikanto and Old Shoe, the main artist of the night took the stage. Chicago Farmer is the lone Cody Diekhoff, belting out his soul on an acoustic guitar. Based in Chicago for a decade now, Cody has been profoundly inspired by the working-class folk musicians of our time. “This is a working man’s singer/songwriter. The strident tones of his voice will make you sit up and listen” (Chicago Acoustic Undergroud). Bringing me right back to the city I love, Cody performed classic songs off his “About Time” album, while debuting songs off his latest album “Backenforth, IL.” It just came out in January, so be sure to take a listen if you missed this great show!
Amazing, Intimate Venue

Over the past year, I have seen a few shows at S.P.A.C.E., and let me tell you, it's an amazing venue. If you're looking for a smaller, more intimate place to see live music, it's a perfect choice. There really isn't a bad seat in there and you're able to reserve tables in advance if you choose. At each show I went to, there were seats placed around 3 sides of the stage, creating a super intimate and comfortable experience. The staff is extremely nice and helpful, and the restaurant attached to it makes some delicious pizza. It's easily my favorite venue in the Chicagoland area.
