The Chicago World Music Festival is the biggest and longest-running world music festival in the country. Since 1999, various venues in the city, including the Chicago Cultural Center, welcome musicians from all over the world to perform at the free Chicago World Music Festival for a week in September.
Every year, fans of world music flock to this eclectic festival to catch the best performers in world music genres ranging from Portuguese fado to Tuvan throat singing. Past performers at the Chicago World Music Festival include Maria de Barros, Joaquin Diaz, Janka Nabay, and Slavic Soul Party.
There are no tickets to the free Chicago World Music Festival, but performances for headlining acts fill up fast, so be sure to arrive early. Stick around after your favorite performances and get to know some of the down-to-earth international musicians at the bars and coffee shops around the Chicago Cultural Center.
