There are few cities in the country where comedy shows are taken more seriously than in Chicago. Well, not seriously, seriously. But the point is, there are more comedy shows in Chicago than in most cities, and some of the best talent in the country comes here to break their bones and highlight their material.
For starters, consider the list of great comedians to come out of the city: John and James Belushi, Michael Ian Black, Kathy Griffin, Bernie Mac, Bill Murray, Bob Newhart, Harold Ramis, and Robin Williams.
Then, consider the alumni who came out of Chicago’s most famous comedy factory, The Second City: John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and others.
It’s fair to say that when it comes to Chicago comedy shows, the denizens of the Windy City have certainly been spoiled. Beyond Second City, there’s also Zanies Comedy Club, ComedySportz, and iO Improv, which have all featured some of the biggest names in the comedy business.
So if you’re looking for some serious side-splitting stand-up, there are few cities in the world better than Chicago for amazing comedy shows any day of the week. And if you’re lucky, one of your hometown favorites just might make a surprise appearance for a late night set.
