Like the gym is a haven for body builders, Harvard Square’s Brattle Theatre is a haven for film buffs. Classic movie fans come in droves to see their favorite black and white films on the big screen, from It’s a Wonderful Life and Casablanca to Animal Crackers, while indie and artsy flicks draw Cambridge’s resident bohemian culture and “recent raves” give the general population a second chance to see a critically acclaimed film a few months after it has left the major theaters.
Founded in 1871, Brattle Theatre has undergone multiple renovations and policy changes throughout the years. Most recently, the theater gained a beer and wine license, so hipsters and indie kids can sip a cold one while munching buttery popcorn.
Its central location in Harvard Square makes for an easy T ride – simply hop off at the Harvard stop on the Red Line. Parking is always a crap shoot in Cambridge, so while driving to a matinee at the Brattle Theatre may be feasible, it generally isn’t recommended. While seeing a movie at the Brattle doesn’t involve high-tech Imax screens and 3D glasses, odds are you won’t miss the fanfare once Bogie enters the scene.
