Broadway lovers flock to the opulent Boston Opera House to catch touring productions of the hottest musicals. Located in the heart of the Theater District on the edge of the Downtown Crossing area, the theater has been standing since 1928, although it was originally built to be a movie house. Now exclusively a live performance venue, shows at the Boston Opera House have included Billy Elliot, South Pacific, American Idiot, and Riverdance in its nine-decade tenure. The Opera House is also the permanent home of the Boston Ballet, presenting a variety of ballet performances per season, as well as the Nutcracker each winter. The splendor of the interior transports patrons back in time to the gilded age – lofty golden columns, rich red curtains, and glittering chandeliers harken back to the venue’s early days. The theater can hold up to 2,677 people between the main floor and the balconies, and the stepped floor plan ensures that the stage is clearly visible from each seat in the house. A number of garages in the area make parking convenient, and as Downtown Crossing is a stop on the Green, Red, and Orange lines, public transportation is a cinch as well.
