Allston / Brighton, Boston –

Winner of numerous accolades including Boston Magazine’s Best Beer Selection, Sunset Grill & Tap attracts hordes of animated students from the nearby Boston University, Berklee, and Harvard campuses, making the bar a quintessential college hangout.

Adorned with walls of beer bottles and the requisite mishmash of neon signs, mirrors, murals, and beer posters, Sunset is a low-key, after-work watering hole early in the week when drinking buddies gather downstairs to down Murphy’s Stout or Narragansett Lager, catch the Sox on TV, or slip into a booth to order the popular Fiesta Nachos from the extensive menu of southwestern fare.

The action starts to pick up on Wednesdays, when brainiacs and grad students pack in for trivia and a few selections from the sixteen-page menu of over four hundred ciders, microbrews, vintage beers, and IPAs.

Once the weekend rolls around, Sunset comes alive with frenetic energy as gaggles of rowdy music, pre-law, and liberal arts majors in college sweaters and backwards baseball caps flock in to the upstairs bar to eventually overpower the jukebox with drunken chatter and raucous chants.

Obviously an ideal hangout for college students and local young professionals, Sunset Grill & Tap is also a sure bet for any beer enthusiast looking for one of the most comprehensive beer menus in town.

Sunset Grill & Tap User Reviews

meg jones wall May 6, 2013 2.0 stars go for the beers...or to nurse a hangover. this place truly has an amazing beer list - and they also have a pretty serious tequila list. even if you don't know a ton about beer, between the helpful and unpretentious menu and the kind servers, you'll be able to find something delicious. i also love sunset for its tuna melt, which i maintain is the best hangover food in boston. when you've spent the night in allston, you definitely need this bad boy in the morning.
Alex Shi Apr 30, 2013 3.0 stars Going Back to Explore the Beer Menu I walked in, the bartender handed me a brochure. That's their drink menu, mostly beer. I'm not any expert in beer but the simple layout of the menu allowed me to see through different categories and choose my own very favorite drink for the night. Bartenders are nice and helpful, and thank god not pushy. First floor is spacey and very well decorated. Didn't try their food and only had a Sammy Adams Blueberry Beer. I am definitely going back soon and read into the beer menu. It could be a nice challenge to try out all the beers they have on tap or in bottles.
Alexandra Kaplan Apr 28, 2013 3.0 stars Great Atmosphere, Good Food Sunset is the kind of place you go when you have had a bad day, and are looking for somewhere that will make you feel great. The atmosphere is hip, and the food is decent. With portions that are sure to fill you up, and a beer menu so large and varied that it will get your eyes rolling into the back of your head, you will not regret the visit. If you visit a restaurant for the atmosphere as much as the food, then you're heading to the right place.
Nicole Tremaglio Apr 12, 2013 3.0 stars Amazing Selection So. Many. Beers. There is an entire menu dedicated to just beers, and it encompasses every flavor and taste that you could think of. The atmosphere is welcoming and noisy, with the crowd varying from college students to sports fans to local professionals. The food is pretty good as well -- we had a West Coast themed dinner, complete with fish tacos and nachos. It's a fun and different place to drink, and you can always head over to TITS to dance after a few beers.
Catherine Jordan-La Rosa Mar 22, 2013 4.0 stars One Of A Kind Get ready to read at Sunset...the beer selection is about 10 pages long, even with a tiny font! They really do have something for everyone, from gluten free ciders to mango tequila and everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) in between. Feel like a pumpkin brew? They have dozens. Chocolate beer more your thing? Sunset's got you covered. The bartender was super friendly and put up with my indecisiveness and beer ignorance like a pro. Even if you're not a beer lover, you should still come on down to Sunset. They have small selection of specialty cocktails and are the makers of what is possible my favorite drink ever: Give Me That Becky (Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka, Absolut Peach and Lemonade. Yum.) The laid back, kitschy vibe makes Sunset feel like a truly authentic place that's not trying to hard. It's all about the drinks here!
Andrea Giovannucci Mar 11, 2013 4.0 stars A Beer Lover's Paradise Being a student in Boston can be challenging-between exams and sub-zero winter temperatures-it’s no surprise that many gather at Sunset Bar and Grill for a night out. Featuring a beer list with hundreds of domestic and imported drafts, and ideally located between Boston College and Boston University, Sunset is the perfect bar/restaurant to try an obscure coffee stout or just stick to the beers you know and love. Featuring kitschy bar paraphernalia, like neon beer signs and vintage alcohol ads, the atmosphere is always lively. Though it has two floors, Sunset can get especially packed on weekends and the atmosphere is rowdier-so if you're on a first date it will be even hard to pretend you're listening. Those coming right after work have a better chance of snagging a seat than those arriving after 7:30 pm. However, it is worth the wait. Though mostly filled with students, anyone can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and delicious food, especially with a beer or five. As equally impressive and diverse as their beer menu, Sunset has a selection of food so enormous it is the perfect place to go with a group of friends who cannot agree on anything. From standard pub fare to steaks and fish, even their dessert menu is massive and the Mississippi Mud pie is to die for. Whether you’re a student or a beer snob, Sunset has managed to satisfy both groups, without having an atmosphere of pretension.
Kevin Smyth Dec 10, 2012 2.0 stars Sunset Bar and Grill The food here is really good an reasonably priced. They also have a giant beer menu. Most of them are international brews and personally, I never know what I am ordering there. There is a pretty good, but in my opinion it is more of a restaurant then a bar.
Nick Heupel Nov 13, 2012 4.0 stars A Good Time For All Imagine a cold winter night in Boston. The wind howls outside, strong enough to pierce your thickest wool pea coat and play your spine like Mozart's cold, dead fingers on a piano. Sounds bad, right? You want to get together with your best friends and have a good time out. What better to steel your heart against the cold than the thought of a couple of pitchers of pale ale and Southwestern-style comfort food? Everyone will brave the weather for a heaping pile of nachos at Sunset Grill and Tap. The Allston restaurant is a staple of the local college nightlife. However, college students aren't the only patrons. Sunset is a post-work haven for young professionals seeking a versatile bar that caters to sports fans, intellectuals, beer enthusiasts, and anyone who just wants to enjoy good conversation with friends. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, allowing for guilt-free drink guzzling. Whether you are sipping a margarita or a creamy stout, you can rest assured that Sunset will satisfy your inevitable food cravings. Notable items to share with the table: South-of-the-border Fiesta Nachos (don't chicken out, get the full order) and "World Renowned" Buffalo Wings (for full flavor, order the "Atomic Wings"). For those looking to explore one of the city's most extensive beer menus, Sunset Grill and Tap is the place to be. Offerings include draft and bottled beer, local and domestic specialty brews, and beers from around the world. Tackling this impressively long menu would leave one with a superior knowledge for their own tastes in beer and with a superior beer gut to prove it. If you are more interested in warming up a cold night with a shot of tequila, head to the other location, Sunset Cantina, on Commonwealth Avenue across the street from Boston University's Agganis Arena. Known for having perhaps the best margarita in Boston, Sunset Cantina has a list of tequilas that extends far beyond the well-known names of Cuervo and Patron with some 200 blancos, anejos, reposados, and mezcales available every night, without breaking a sweat. And if you're feeling in a particularly silly mood, you can sample some celebrity tequila brands, including Justin Timberlake's 901 tequila.
