Party Earth Silvertone Bar & Grill Review

The Scene

Silvertone Bar & Grill in Downtown Boston is a retro bar/restaurant with great cheap eats & classic drinks. Take ad-vintage of this great Boston spot with Party Earth.

Hearty plates, classic Negronis, and cheap, cold domestics all get equal attention at basement bar Silvertone Bar & Grill, a cozy Downtown hangout that seeks to emulate a perfect combination of old and new.

Opened in 1997, the venue sports pin-up girls and irreverent family photos as décor, while the menu intersperses classic cocktails with "happy meals" – Miller and a shot. To add to the eclectic vibe, Billie Holiday croons over the speakers one minute while the White Stripes blast through the next.

Artsy students and über-casual area workers head down past the electric neon sign to snatch seats at the small bar, where they commence testing the bartender's skills and noshing on comfort food.

Macaroni and cheese and hearty pork chops are big favorites, as are the steak tips soaked in a Long Island marinade – and the best news is that little on the menu exceeds $15.

A couple of TVs behind the bar allow sports fans to glance at the score on occasion, but most of the patrons are too engrossed in conversation and their martinis to pay much attention.

As the night marches on, packs of flirty college kids usually start streaming through the door, congregating in the cozy dining area to chat and laugh over the champagne of beer.

It’s rather apropos that the staff dons black t-shirts artfully emblazoned with 40s-style radios – after all, the prices at Silvertone Bar & Grill are reminiscent of a bygone era, and the atmosphere is retro without ever feeling tired.

Tip from Emma:

Silvertone has a function room they call the Chez Freddie Lounge. It can host up to 65 people for drinks and light eats, has its own private bar, its own sound system, and even its own bathrooms.

  • Crowd

Hipsters, artsy students, suave young professionals, restaurant industry folk, folks stopping in pre- or post-show at the nearby movie complex, 20s to late 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Mix of indie, alternative rock, jazz, and soul dominates the playlist. A couple of small TVs show the game, but they’re hardly the focus.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Comfort food served in generous portions, including shepherd’s pie, mac and cheese, burgers, steak tips, and meatloaf, with a handful of ethnic options like jerk chicken and Italian pasta.

  • Prices

    Appetizers $4–$11, salads $4–$8, sandwiches $6–$8, entrées $9–$21. Beer $3–$6+, wine $6–$9/glass or $25–$60/bottle, cocktails $9–$10+.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual: vintage duds, dark jeans, tasteful t-shirts, hats, halter tops, cute blouses.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Friday and Saturday nights for the liveliest crowds, or any other night to enjoy a scrumptious drink and dish with a close companion.

  • Close By

Marliave (10 Bosworth Street) serves craft cocktails in a similarly genteel atmosphere, but has considerably more elbow room.
