Anyone looking for an authentic taste of Dublin in the heart of Jamaica Plain should head to Brendan Behan’s Pub, a laid-back neighborhood watering hole where it’s all about friendly chitchat and good beer.

Dimly lit with a constant soundtrack of indie hits and rock classics, the tiny bar offers over twenty-five draft beers and an impressive selection of Irish whiskeys that bring in a loyal crowd of locals, hipsters, and students nearly every night.

Drinking buddies and lone wolves belly up to the traditional mahogany bar to chat by the light of the aquarium, while groups of artists, musicians, and creative young professionals settle in with their pints at the oval tables near the entrance.

Although packed to the rafters on the weekends, Brendan Behan’s maintains a relaxed and kick-back atmosphere where even dogs are welcome.

If the grey skies and fluctuating temperatures are testing your love of New England, go to the Behan for a little reminder of why this place is actually pretty cool.

Whenever I think of the Behan I am filled with the warm, nostalgic sentiments one prescribes only to their most frequented hometown pub. 70's punk artist Jonathon Richman describes it best, "I've already been to Paris, I already been to Rome and what did I do but miss my home? I have been out west to Californ' but I miss the land where I was born. I can't help it." The Behan is the quintessence of the New England bar: dim, cheap, mahogany, Irish, apathetically welcoming, and a little rough around the edges. The bartenders are efficient and kind-- always down to have a chat if you find yourself desperate for a beer on a slow Tuesday night. The crowd is a diverse amalgamation of local punks and artists, young professionals, and older JP natives. The atmosphere emits absolutely no hostility or judgement and I mean it when I say everyone will feel welcome. The beer is cheap and the cocktails are usually pretty good and alcoholic (which I actually really appreciate considering the watery juice I am served at Charlie's). They don't serve food, but if you get the munchies just go across the street for some cheap chinese or pizza (Food Wall and Nemo's are both open until 1 or 2am) and bring it back to the bar. If the grey skies and fluctuating temperatures are testing your love of New England, go to the Behan for a little reminder of why this place is actually pretty cool.
