Boston - Party Climate

Down to earth, laid back, and gritty, Boston is a city that wears its heart on its sleeve – and with generations of diehard sports fans and families who can trace their lineage back to the Mayflower, that heart takes shape as an intense shared pride in their town.

Nowhere does that pride shine more than in the city’s love for its home teams. Bostonians eat, sleep, and breathe their sports, and the social scene comes alive whenever there’s a Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, or Bruins game on, when rabid fans gather at the myriad drinking dens, restaurants, and bars, from Cambridge to Allston and turn the game into an all-night event. The city is also home to hundreds of authentic Irish bars and pubs, where post-game pride transforms into beer-drinking revelry.

Despite the focus on sports, however, Boston’s heritage clearly goes beyond its teams... read more

Boston is a huge city that’s all about two very important things – sports and beer. Whether you’re a born and bred Mass native or just visiting Beantown, catching a game at Fenway is a rite of passage that no sports fan should miss. Days in the city are perfect for boozing it up at Sox games or messing around in the Common, while nights consist of ordering rounds at loud and rambunctious pubs with the Celtics game flashing across the flat-screens. Boston is also a killer college town, and with over fifty universities in the area, there’s always an Irish bar or unpretentious club nearby that's overflowing with coeds and pub-crawling post-grads. This is especially true in the Faneuil Hall area, which is packed with rowdy spots where you don’t have to worry about dress codes and long lines. There's definitely a lot of craziness surrounding the big games, big schools, and great pubs, and it's all tied together with one thing – the awesome beer. In a city that’s home to Samuel Adams Brewery and countless microbrews, it’s obvious that Bostonians take their beer seriously, and home-grown brews can be found even at the lowliest dives. So dress down, drink up, and enjoy.

A charming New England city, Boston has a certain panache that, though the town may not be as exclusive or as extensive as New York, still makes it worthy of a glam night out. Although there’s only a handful of super-trendy clubs and bars in town, the chance to party with one of the Patriots or Red Sox boys sipping Cristal in the VIP rooms should be enough incentive to break out your Louboutins. True, the winters are tough, but the city really comes to life once the weather begins to warm up, and days are once again spent shopping up and down trendy Newbury Street, brunching on eggs Benedict and mimosas at one of the cafés lining the Downtown streets or strolling along Commonwealth Avenue on a Sunday afternoon to peek at the to-die-for brownstones. And there's nothing better on a warm summer night than dressing up and hitting one of the chic rooftop lounges in Back Bay and the Leather District, fabulous for relaxing and admiring the views after a gourmet meal of fresh seafood.

Home to some of the most prestigious schools in the world, including Harvard and MIT, Boston is an intellectual and cultural mecca where writers, professors, and students mix and mingle both in and out of the classroom. Walking around during the day is like wandering through a history book that takes you past spots like Ralph Waldo Emerson’s writing hangouts, Paul Revere’s House, and the site of the Boston Massacre, before leading you to an 18th-century pub for a few pints of Guinness. At night, Boston plays host to a small but very solid live music scene, especially in Cambridge, and has a myriad of authentic Irish pubs and bars usually packed with students, locals, and regulars all indulging in Boston’s renowned trifecta of home-brewed beer, clam chowder, and sports. It may be a big city, but Boston has an unpretentious, small town attitude that makes you feel like ‘everybody [really] knows your name,’ from the bartenders to the other patrons who call the local watering holes their own.

What’s not to love about Boston? For starters, your days will never be boring because there’s just so much to do, from shopping for handmade goods and fresh produce at the SoWa craft market and scouring the tchotchke vendors at Faneuil Hall to devouring some famous cannolis in the North End. You can even get an American history lesson – just follow the red-brick Freedom Trail, which links together a string of historic landmarks. Boston really hums at night, though – as long as it’s not too cold – with the subway making it easy for the rowdy crowds of students and post-grads to get to the overcrowded bars to celebrate the Sox, Pats, or Celtics, or simply have a girls’ night out in the super-accessible clubs. The city is really at its best in the summer, when you can lie out in Boston Common, stroll along the Esplanade, or enjoy one of the biggest Fourth of July celebrations in the country. Snagging one of the best spots along the Charles River might require some planning and an early wake-up call, but having a stellar view of the fireworks bursting across the sky is well worth the effort!
