The Wilbur Theatre is probably one of the strangest places in the nation to see a comedy show – raunchy jokes don’t generally get told in a historical brick building that dates back to 1914 with sweeping red curtains and a glittering chandelier. The theater became the new home of Boston’s Comedy Connection in 2008, and since then, the likes of Louis CK, Pauly Shore, Joel McHale, Kathy Griffin, and David Spade have all done their best to lighten the mood of the serious setting.
The venue also hosts the occasional musical performance, with past shows at the Wilbur Theatre including the xx, Wu-Tang Clan, and Blondie. A seating capacity of 1,200 makes it one of the largest comedy venues in the city, and since it’s located in the theater district, it’s easily accessible via the MBTA Red, Orange, and Green lines.
While limited concessions are available in the lobby, people who really feel like getting their dinner and drink on do it at one of the nearby lounges before or after the show. Combining irreverent comedians and lofty architecture, a comedy show at the Wilbur Theatre is a unique experience.
