The Hatch Shell Information

Situated on the Charles River Esplanade, the Hatch Shell hosts Boston’s most beloved event – the Fourth of July celebration. Each year, the Boston Pops play a patriotic concert for a massive crowd sprawled along the banks on blankets and lawn chairs, and afterwards one of the largest fireworks displays in the nation can be seen over the Charles from almost any spot in the city. Since it was built in 1941, events at the Hatch Shell throughout the year have included Earth Fest, assorted rock and classical music concerts, and free family movies each Friday during the summer. Past performers at the Hatch Shell have included Green Day, Rascal Flatts, and Eve 6. Since seating is first-come first-served, it’s advisable to head to the area early and claim a space – while there’s no official capacity regulation on the nearly 90,000 square feet of lawn, it is coveted real estate and fills up quickly. Also, there are no benches, so most folks bring deck or folding chairs, or just plop down on the ground and soak up the sunshine.

Grab a blanket and pick a spot to enjoy free live music.

The Hatch Shell has been putting on some of the best shows since it was built in 1941. Thousands gather and try to pick a little piece of real estate to see the stage while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Last year upon attending the Boston Pops Annual Fourth of July show, I was amazed to see the crowd that is drawn; hundreds of thousands of people gather for this event every year making it an event to remember. Gather by the banks of the river Charles and set up your tripod to get some shots of the splendid fireworks. If you're looking for food, there's hundreds of great trucks to grab all your cookout favorites from hot dogs to fried food. If you want a ticket into the oval, get there early and get your spot! Otherwise relax outside, bring a cooler full of beer, and don't forget your red solo cups otherwise your party is over.
Music in the Great Outdoors

The Hatch Shell is really a fun place to visit. It's so nice there in the summer, because you get to be outside and still listen to great music. I've been to a few festivals there, like shows hosted by radio stations such as MixFest, that are always a fun time with friends. Tickets are very cheap and sometimes there are free concerts too. The lawn is awesome and you can fit a ton of people on it, just grab a picnic blanket and some food and you're ready to have a nice chill day with friends. It's also located right on the Charles River and is very easy to get to by car. The area is nice and the venue has good sound, for being outside next to the highway. Highly recommended for some good outdoor fun.
