Organized every September by FM music station Mix 104.1, MixFest is a very popular – and 100% free to attend – day-long outdoor concert series that attracts 150,000+ visitors with a range of live shows put on by some of the station’s favorite major artists.
Since its inception in 1993, MixFest has taken place at the beautiful Hatch Memorial Shell, an outdoor concert venue located steps from the Charles River near downtown Boston, and has played host to performers as varied as TRAIN and Lifehouse to Gavin Degraw and Dido.
Rain or shine, people from all walks of life pack along the huge lawn that extends out from Hatch Shell, with lots of families bringing their little ones for the child-friendly shows that usually kick off the event in the early afternoon.
The venue’s layout makes it easy to flow in and out throughout the day, so tidal waves of college kids usually don’t show up till later for the headliners, though a strict ban on alcohol usually ensures a chill vibe dominates the scene regardless of who is on the stage.
Sunscreen, bug spray, blankets, and chairs are all recommended – as well as a jacket if the weather has plans to go south. Bringing a picnic basket is also a good idea for anyone who doesn’t want to fight the lines at the several concession stands, but that about sums up what patrons can bring since backpacks are not allowed.
With a varied lineup of rock, acoustic, country, and other adult contemporary music styles that dominate 104.1’s playlist, the music at MixFest is a great free-for-all that also happens to be free for all to enjoy.
