Organized by the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts, the Boston Local Food Festival is a free annual October event that attracts more than 30,000 people despite its relative infancy, having first burst (sustainably, of course) onto the scene back in 2010.
Normally held at The Rose Kennedy Greenway overlooking historic Boston Harbor, the day-long Boston Local Food Festival focuses on local foods, produce, and beverages from small businesses within the Massachusetts region. Over 100 vendors are featured each year, serving up everything from fresh seafood pulled from the shores of Martha’s Vineyard to delicious desserts crafted at local bakeries to savory meats from independent butcheries.
Food isn’t the only thing on offer at the Boston Local Food Festival either, as area wineries also make an appearance to pour their newest varietals, craft breweries show off their latest drafts, and several live bands play throughout the day.
Other entertainment at the Boston Local Food Festival includes cooking competitions and a range of DIY demo booths with workshops that cover everything from home pickling to outdoor camp cooking.
Although the Boston Local Food Festival is free to attend, the individual food and drink prices vary, with most plates running around $5 each.
In the spirit of local and sustainable practices, Boston Local Food Festival attendees are encouraged to take public transportation, and organizers say they recycle more than 85% of the waste generated during the event.
