Party Earth The Lower Depths Review

The Scene

The Lower Depths in Boston's Fenway is a beer-lover's paradise & miles from a sports bar. Grab several great pints in Boston with Party Earth.

Descending into The Lower Depths generally isn’t a good thing, unless, of course, it’s referring to Boston’s funky craft beer bar.

Located a few blocks from Fenway, the venue surges with Sox fans two hours before and after games, but the regular crowd is composed of hipsters, artists, and free thinkers who congregate beneath life-size murals of edgy rock legends like Patti Smith and Sid Vicious, or along the blue-tiled bar that takes up much of the tiny room.

A soundtrack of eclectic tunes sparks conversations between bartenders and the scrappy clientele, while girls in vintage attire and their flannel-clad cohorts agonize over a drinks list that includes seventeen rotating drafts and over 150 bottles, ranging from the commonplace (PBR), to the exotic, like Youngs DBL Chocolate Stout, a.k.a. “The Adult Chocolate Milkshake”.

The lighthearted feel of the bright azure and yellow walls is carried over into the sassy food menu, with items like the Fat Kid Salad, Kick Ass Chicken Sandwich, and five plates centered on tater tots.

A handful of TVs behind the bar show the game, but most patrons are too busy chatting and sipping to pay attention. A tiny patio located a few steps from street level offers a shady spot for a relaxing weekend brunch.

While the location might suggest it’s just another Sox bar, a closer look at The Lower Depths proves it’s much more than a subterranean spot to swill Miller and dish over MLB.

Tip from Emma:

If you’re craving a Fenway Frank but don’t have tickets (or any desire to go) to the game, Lower Depths has the exact same dog. The frank, the bun, everything is the same, except they cost $1 compared to $5 at Fenway. Plus, you can eat it while sipping a craft beer instead of a Bud Lite.
