Maybe it’s because the winters are so cold or maybe it’s because the city is completely landlocked – but for whatever the reason, Berliners love the beach and decided to take matters into their own hands by creating their own sandy oases smack dab in the middle of their city.

One of the best beaches in Berlin, and also one of the first is Strandbar Mitte. Located in the center of the city on the banks of the Spree River, Strandbar Mitte is a summertime hotspot that features hundreds of beach chairs, a tiki-style bar, and late night DJs that keep Berliners in a festive mood.

Another stellar beach area is Badeschiff. Extremely popular, and often overly-crowded, this beach, pool, outdoor bar, and concert venue caters to everyone from boisterous twenty-somethings to families and everything in between. At night, the energy picks up with DJs and live bands and makes everyone forget they’re actually not in some tropical paradise.

In Germany, the people love their beer, they love their sports, they love their food, and they most certainly love their Berlin beaches. So kick off your shoes, head down to the river, and spend a warm summer day in the sand no matter how strange that may seem in Berlin.
