Max-Schmeling Halle is a multi-purpose sports arena located in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg. It opened in 1996.
The arena is named after the German heavyweight-boxing champ, Max Schmeling, who was world champion from 1930 to 1932. Schmeling’s two fights with American Joe Louis in 1936 and 1938 drew international attention.
Max-Schmeling-Halle was originally built to host the boxing events for the 2000 Summer Olympics, but when Sydney was awarded the games it was refurbished as a multi-purpose arena that could host both concerts and sporting events.
Sporting events held at Max-Schmeling include boxing, wrestling, handball, and basketball.
Concerts at Max-Schmeling have included acts by Blink 182, Drake, Mötley Crüe, Slash and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
Capacity of the arena, depending on the event, is upwards of 10,000.
