With plenty of offbeat bars and dance clubs that have a laid-back but edgy atmosphere, Friedrichshain oozes an alternative, counter-culture vibe.
Part of the former East Berlin, Friedrichshain is only now undergoing the inevitable post-Wall restoration and gentrification – in contrast to the neighboring areas of Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg – so it still retains a slightly diamond-in-the-rough charm.
The nightlife centers in and around Simon-Dach-Strasse and Boxhangener Platz, which are bursting with bar and club options that attract a steady flow of locals during the week, but really explode with a lively, raucous crowd on the weekends.
There are so many bars, in fact, that it’s unnecessary to make plans for a specific venue ahead of time – it’s enough to show up and choose one.
All in all, the ridiculous wealth of options in Friedrichshain creates a bustling and edgy vibe in this young and growing neighborhood.
