Shabby-chic Vögelchen (Birdie) is a multi-purpose creative space, bar, and all around acid flashback that can host a raucous night or a relaxing cocktail depending on when patrons fly by.
Catering mostly to local artists, writers, and generally broke bohemians, the venue offers a drinks menu with a good selection of local brews and an arm’s-length cocktail list full of sipping favorites like the Old Fashioned, Negroni, and Manhattan.
The layout is sort of Dali-meets-old-school-Berlin, with a massive retro clock on the wall, black satin lamps, a vase chandelier, mismatched but elegant furniture, a fish tank television, and potted plants and tree branches strewn throughout.
As such, the space may require multiple viewings – and multiple cocktails – to make any sense out of it.
Local artists put on shows throughout the week, so there’s no telling what else might be found on display, while burgeoning writers take advantage of the tiny writing room located (rather perfectly) under a stairway and equipped with a retro typewriter for that clickety-clack nostalgia.
Quiet and reserved during the week, Friday and Saturday nights see the venue taken over by pop and disco on the sound system as revelers drink and dance into the early hours.
A kaleidoscope for the senses from the eyes to the gullet, Vögelchen is like a cozy home owned by a really cool uncle…who happens to be crazy as a loon and have a penchant for heavy-handed drinks.
Relaxed mix of gay and straight creative types, artists, musicians, actors, writers, and Kreuzberg bohemians, mid-20s to mid-40s.
Light jazz, blues, and period music from the 1920s to 1950s during the week, and lively pop and disco on Friday and Saturday nights.
Vögelchen hosts events including art exhibits, flea markets, swap shops, live bands (mostly on Thursdays), and themed parties, but there is no set schedule. Visitors should check the official site/blog for up-to-date listings.
Free Wi-Fi.
Small selection of cakes. Basement can be reserved for private parties. Small street-side patio.
Cakes €2–€3. Beer €2–€3, wine €2–€3, cocktails €5–€6, long drinks €5–€6, shots €2–€3, coffee/tea €1–€3.
Casual: white T-shirts, jeans, patent leather shoes, ironic three-piece suits, fedoras, lace, tracksuits, sundresses, busy blouses.
Friday and Saturday nights for high-energy music and a big crowd, or early in the week to chill out over coffee and cocktails.
Görlitzer Park (Wiener Straße 59) is just around the corner and is a great outdoor venue for legal public drinking, people-watching, and sunbathing before a night out – or just to sleep one off in the grass.
