Anyone who suffers under the sweltering Spanish sun may find the perfect remedy at Icebarcelona on Barceloneta beach.
Overheated patrons are guided into a vault-like room, which is kept at a temperature of minus 12˚C year round, where they are then handed silver arctic-style jackets and gloves. Once thoroughly protected from the cold, guests are invited to drink a vodka cocktail or mixer from a glass made of ice.
In fact, true to its name, Icebarcelona is made entirely of ice, including the walls, bar stools (with their little fur coverings), the bar itself, and some glacial sculptures that include Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia and a family of towering eight-foot polar bears.
The clientele is largely made up of international travelers and groups looking for a bit of novelty, so they rarely stay longer than it takes to finish the complimentary drinks.
Nevertheless, Icebarcelona offers an unusual, fun, and refreshing experience and is certainly worth a visit – and with a comfy terrace right on the beach, the bar also provides a prime place to linger and warm up again afterwards.
Once the Icebarcelona patrons have finished their pitchers of cocktails, the terrace is usually taken over by a trendier local crowd that gathers to enjoy the sea breeze and their drinks before hitting the clubs.
Curious passersby, tourist groups, and students in the Ice Bar itself, beachgoers and pre-clubbers on the terrace, 20s and up.
Sub-zero temperatures during the sticky Spanish summer. Occasional special events with DJs.
None.
Ticket €15, includes one drink. Beer €3.50, vodka €5, cocktails €8.50+.
Casual.
Go around 10 or 11pm for an unusual way to warm up – or rather cool down – for an evening in Port Olimpic.
