Gran Teatre del Liceu Theater

Gran Teatre del Liceu, located on La Rambla, 51-59, is one of Barcelona's greatest historical treasures. It was founded in 1838 within the secularized convent of Montsió and moved to its current location in 1844 under pressure from the nuns of Montsió, who wished to return to their convent.

Gran Theatre del Liceu is unique in that it does not contain a royal box due to the fact that Queen Isabel II did not contribute to the construction. Architect Miguel Garriga i Roca designed the building, which was inaugurated on April 4, 1847 with a mixed program including a musical overture, a historical play, and a ballet. At the time, Gran Teatre del Liceu was the biggest opera house in Europe, containing 3,500 seats.

The building suffered two major fires, one in 1861 and one in 1994. During the Spanish Civil War, the Gran Teatre del Liceu was damaged by bombs being thrown into the opera stalls by anarchist Santiago Salvador. The Gran Teatre del Liceu was saved from economic decline on several occasions through government intervention and private contribution.

Operas performed at Gran Teatre del Liceu include Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco and Bellini's Linda di Chamounix, among many others. Currently, performances at Gran Teatre del Liceu include operas by Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, and many other celebrated composers. There are also choral and musical concerts at Gran Teatre del Liceu.
