Palau Blaugrana is an arena located at Carrer d'Arístides Maillol, 12, in Barcelona, Spain, adjacent to FC Barcelona's Camp Nou. Palau Blaugrana translates literally to “Blue and Deep Red Palace” and lives up to its name by boldly sporting FC Barcelona's iconic colors. Sports at Palau Blaugrana are played by the divisions of FC Barcelona in basketball, handball, roller hockey, and futsal. Futsal is a variant of football played indoors on a smaller pitch with a smaller ball. Because of those factors, futsal emphasizes creativity, technique, and ball control.
Built in 1971, Palau Blaugrana originally seated 5,696 people. In 1994, it was remodeled to hold its current capacity of 7,585 people. Sandro Rosell, current President of FC Barcelona, has announced plans to expand capacity to 12,000 by 2013 for handball and basketball games at Palau Blaugrana. The plans also include a smaller venue with a 3,000 seat capacity plus additional parking, offices, and an auditorium.
Notable events at Palau Blaugrana include the roller hockey, taekwondo, and judo events of the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona. Many basketball and handball players at Palau Blaugrana have retired their jerseys at the arena including Andres Jimenez, Nacho Solozabal, and Oscar Grau.
