Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys formerly known as Estadi Olímpic de Montjüic, was built on Paseo Olímpico, 17, in 1927 for the 1929 International Exposition and for Barcelona's bid for the 1936 Summer Olympics. The People's Olympiad, an event organized to protest the awarding of the 1936 Summer Olympics to Berlin, was cancelled due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The stadium fell into disrepair over time but was renovated in 1989 for the 1992 Summer Olympics. It was renamed in 2001 after former President of the Generalitat de Catalunya Lluís Companys i Jover who was executed during the Franco regime.
