Cúpula de las Arenas Information

Cúpula de las Arenas - Arena in Barcelona.

Cúpula de las Arenas, also referred to as Las Arenas, is an impressive domed building located in Plaça Espanya s/n that contains 2,588 m2 of open-plan space. The building itself is 27 meters high and is one of the largest domes in Europe. The original building, designed by architect August Font i Carreras, was opened on June 29, 1900 as La Plaza de Las Arenas, a bullring. The first bullfight at Cúpula de las Arenas hosted eight bulls. Luis Mazzantini, Antonio de Dios, and Conejito were among the first bullfighters at Cúpula de las Arenas that day.

Historical events at Cúpula de las Arenas include the historic rally lead by Salvador Segui, known as el Noi del Sucre, as well as the building's use as barracks for the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil war. After the war, various sporting events at Cúpula de las Arenas, especially boxing, became popular, along with circuses and festivals. The final bullfight at Cúpula de las Arenas was held on June 19, 1977 after which time the building became a shopping center. Currently, attractions at Cúpula de las Arenas include a six-floor shopping center with shops and restaurants, a movie theater, el Museo del Rock, and an outdoor panoramic view of Barcelona from the top of the building.

Not on the spot, put it on the spot

Of all the reviews I checked of Barcelona, hostels, blogs, tripadvisor and so on; none of them mentioned this place. What a pity! Where it used to be a bullfighting arena, when the Catalan government banned that practice, the place became a Mall, and in the process they had to build a roof. Located close to the 92' Olympic stadium, to Miró museum and to National Art museum of Cataluña, this is one of the best places to get an amazing view of Barcelona. Get to the roof and feel the mediterranean wind, get pushed by its freshness and strenght, and take beautiful 360° pictures of the catalonian capital city.
