The Circuit de Catalunya is a motorsport racetrack located at Mas “La Moreneta” PD 27 in Montmeló, Barcelona, Spain and was built in 1991, the same year it began hosting the Spanish Grand Prix. During the 1992 Olympics, the Circuit acted as a start and finish line for the road team time trial cycling event, which was one of the more notable events at the Circuit de Catalunya. Due to the shape of the Circuit de Catalunya, overtaking is frequent at the slipstream and the long straight; however, the long straight is followed by a sharp turn which allows for the leading car to create turbulence, making it extremely difficult for the following cars to pass. The track was redesigned in 2007 to include chicanes, or moveable barriers, but this did not help to increase overtaking.
Races at Circuit de Catalunya include Formula One races, Moto GP races, and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup preliminary and qualifying races. Previous drivers at Circuit de Catalunya include Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, and Michael Schumacher. Fernando Alonso was the first Spanish Formula One driver to win at his home country's track in 2006.
Racing schools at Circuit de Catalunya are available for anyone who is able to drive a manual vehicle and focus on risk prevention when racing. Potential students at Circuit de Catalunya racing classes much meet minimum height and weight requirements. Guided tours of Circuit de Catalunya are offered at 10am and 12pm daily but are limited and subject to availability.
