Garmin Barcelona Triathlon Sports / Triathlon Every year in October

A relatively new addition to the triathlon scene, the Garmin Barcelona Triathlon first swam, jogged, and skidded into reality back in 2008, giving lots of (very fit) folks yet another reason to visit this beautiful city.

Taking place in October, the race starts in the water just off the gorgeous La Mar Bella beach, after which competitors race and run through designated streets that have thankfully been closed to any other vehicle traffic.

Although the Garmin Barcelona Triathlon race route can change every year, participants are guaranteed to pass by many famous city buildings and gorgeous parks, making the event a great – albeit sweaty – way to see much of Barcelona.

Elite athletes and first-time triathletes are both encouraged to participate thanks to three separate distance categories. The Super Sprint involves a 400-meter swim, 10K bike, and a 2.5K run. The Sprint amps it up a bit with a 750-meter swim, 20K bike, and 5K run. The Olympic distance, meanwhile, involves a 1.5K swim, 40K bike, and a 10K run.

Participants can compete as individuals or in teams. Garmin Barcelona Triathlon entry fees start at €37 for the Super Sprint, €49 for the Sprint, and €59 for the Olympic. Optional chip rental to track your official time is a few Euros extra, and all prices start going up a few months before the race.

Officials also organize a Tri-Party a couple days before the Garmin Barcelona Triathlon, which is normally held in a trendy area club and includes dinner, dancing, and several raffle prizes. Tri-Party tickets are usually around €30.
