Barri Gòtic, Barcelona –
Lost in the back streets of Barcelona’s labyrinthine Barri Gòtic, Harlem Jazz Club’s hard-to-find location doesn’t deter the loyal crowd of music lovers, local and international, who descend on the venue six nights a week.
The mid-sized space fits the bill perfectly, with a small front bar area offering refreshment and conversation and a stage in back surrounded by tables and plenty of standing room for the appreciative crowds.
Live music comes in the form not only of jazz and blues, but also funk, soul, flamenco, gypsy music, and folk. Whatever the genre, the musicians always deliver high-quality, virtuoso performances that never fail to delight the cultured yet fun-loving patrons who don’t need much encouragement to start whooping, clapping along, or shaking their hips if the rhythm takes them.
The club creates a suitably intimate underground vibe with minimal stage lighting and dim lamps glowing orange over the bar, while ceiling fans work furiously to dispel the ubiquitous cloud of smoke one might expect in a jazz club.
Of course the emphasis any night at Harlem Jazz is on the live bands, but on weekends, those good vibrations don’t die out after the show as salsa music takes over and a Latin party gets going full swing.
A mix of fun-loving young locals and older, more serious music lovers, mid-20s to 50s.
Live jazz, blues, flamenco, soul, folk, and other genres. DJ sessions from 2–5am on the weekends.
Weekday performances begin at 10:30pm with an intermission around 11:30pm before the music starts again at midnight. On weekends, music starts at 11:30pm with an intermission at 1am.
Cover charge €4–€8, includes one drink. Beer €3.80, mixed drinks €8+.
Casual.
Any night there’s a genre or band that suits one’s taste. Check the website for the schedule.
