Party Earth Xixbar Review

The Scene

Xixbar in Poble Sec, Barcelona is a tiny cocktail bar dedicated to rare & wonderful gin! Grab yourself a serious cocktail in Barcelona with Party Earth.

Widely considered home to the best gin and tonics in Barcelona, Xixbar (pronounced “Chicksbar”) is a little cocktail haven that takes a certain juniper berry-flavored spirit very seriously.

The venue’s early days as a dairy are recalled in a few cow murals on the wall, but in truth the tiny space looks more like an ice cream shop, what with its simple little tables, high stainless steel stools, and itty bitty stone bar backed by black and white checkered patterns.

Beer and wine take up a small corner of the menu, but the emphasis is clearly on the gin classics, with 130-odd varieties ready to be poured into all the martinis, Negronis, Pimm’s cups, Singapore Slings, and regular daily specials.

As well as sizeable G&T’s, of course.

Owned by a Scotsman, the joint attracts its share of savvy tourists, but most of the regular crowd is composed of casual Poble Sec locals who know each other by name, as well as diners waiting for a table at Lolita Taperia, a popular tapas joint up the street.

Despite the limited space – or perhaps because of it – Fridays and Saturdays promise a bustling late-night scene, with groups of happy post-club friends often stumbling in for one more round.

Lively and wholly unpretentious, Xixbar promises potent libations and an atmosphere that’s anything but dry…even if the martinis are.

Tip from Jonah:

Xixbar suddenly has you falling in love with gin? You’re in luck! The owner’s gin shop is right next door, so you can buy as many bottles as you can carry. Although you can also save your arms and order right from the bar’s website!

  • Crowd

Gin lovers, tourists off the beaten track, post-clubbers, festive and unpretentious locals, older connoisseurs, and younger experts-in-training, 20s to mid-30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Ambient alternative music at conversation-friendly levels.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Bar snacks include chips, nuts and olives. Small sidewalk patio.

Regular gin tastings hosted by owner Mike Cruickshank are held throughout the month. Anyone interested in getting in on one can sign up on the venue’s website, or check the bar’s Facebook page.

Gin liquor store run by the same owner is directly next to the bar.

  • Prices

    Bar snacks €1.50–€2.50. Beer €2.50–€5.50, wine €3–€4, cocktails €7.50–€9.50, mixed drinks €8–€12+.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Smart casual to hipster funk: traditional office attire, slacks, sweaters, nice t-shirts, flannel, cute skirts, colorful blouses, a little trendier wear on the late-night crowd.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Any night to try a rare variety of gin, or Fridays and Saturdays to cram in with a feisty party crowd.

  • Close By

Lolita Tapería (Carrer de Tamarit, 104) offers a large variety of tapas and is popular with many gin-guzzling regulars as a place to grab some food before heading to Xixbar.
