Literature buffs and aspiring bohemians won’t want to miss London Bar, a legendary venue just off Las Ramblas.

Opened in 1910, this famous tavern was once frequented by such illustrious figures as Ernest Hemingway and Joan Miró, and even Dalí and Picasso were known to drop by on occasion.

The faded splendor of the art deco interior still hints at London Bar’s eventful history, and the venue’s patterned tiled floors, gold-framed photos, dusty piano, and ochre walls lend the place an extra dash of character.

During the day, small groups of locals and expats stop in for coffee and serious conversation or to kill an hour at the bar with a newspaper, while early evenings see groups of tired travelers and professionals lured in by the promise of a nice cool beer. Later on, an additional back room opens to accommodate the barhoppers and pre-club crowd.

Though it rarely gets wild, London Bar is the perfect place to slowly get into the party spirit before hitting the other bars in the area.

Tip from Jonah:

London Bar oozes character and charisma and is always a great place to hang out for beer and conversation. It’s also one of the few central places in Barcelona with free Wi-Fi, so take advantage of the relaxing atmosphere to catch up on some work or start that novel.

  • Crowd

Expats and travelers, many English speakers, early 20s to late 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Good selection of lounge, rock, and alternative on the stereo.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Bar snacks, simple tapas, and sandwiches.

  • Prices

Snacks and tapas €2. Beer €2.50, mixed drinks €7.50+, absinthe €8+, coffee €1.50.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

    Casual.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Weekends are busiest, but the vibe is more that of a European café than a metropolitan bar.

Really great bar

I really like London Bar. It is on the Raval side of the old city. It is a very historic place. Many famous artists and writers came to this bar in Barcelona. I know that Hemingway and Picasso both spent time in London bar and I believe Joan Miro also frequented London Bar. The bar is long and thin and looks like it has been there forever. When I was there, they had a live musician playing guitar and singing at the bar. They only have drinks - no food - so go for drinks and entertainment.
The Big Ben of cool bars.

If the cheap beer doesn’t seal the deal then the live entertainment will. This is the perfect place to go to after a hard day in the office. Simply kick off your shoes, order yourself a stiff one and listen to some local Spanish contemporary music. Don’t be surprised if four or five hours went by without you evening noticing it, only then to realise with a drunken shock that the metro stations have closed and you’re bound to schlep home... But that don’t matter, because I can promise you that you’ll be back again the next night to do it all over again.
