Jun 23, 2012 —  There’s a special, indescribable euphoria when seeing a band you love up close and personal. An unnatural bond forms between you and the band and the strangers around you, as if you were all just let in on a secret that no one else got to experience. And that intimacy is what makes indoor music venues such powerful places to see a show.

Around the world are a handful of indoor scenes that consistently rise above the rest by bringing in the top musical artists and delivering viewers sensational personal experiences. They are sacred spaces where the performances of past legends linger in the air while new ones are ready to make their name.

Envision yourself rocking out to The Rolling Stones or M83 in a 19th century church in Amsterdam with the stained glass windows refracting the flashing stage lights. What about stepping inside the focal point of the 1960’s counterculture movement in San Francisco and seeing a show at what claims to be the birthplace of psychedelic rock?

Below are a few of the best music halls from around the world that week-in and week-out put on shows that will leave your local venue in the dust.

I went to the Fillmore last December to see Infected Mushroom. The venue was a lot bigger than I thought it would be but still had an intimate feeling to it. The bartenders were very friendly and more than willing to serve me AMF after AMF. The place was filled with SF hipsters down to give and receive lightshows. Overall a good experience and a cool venue to check out.

The Palladium and House of Blues are 2 other great venues in LA, both on Sunset so you're right in the middle of all the Hollywood action! At the last concert I went to at the House of Blues, I just walked right up to the front row without any trouble. Great place if you want an intimate venue where you can get as close as you want to the performers.

Chicago has some great ones on the smaller side: Metro, Empty Bottle, Double Door, Subterranean, The Vic, Schubas just to name a few. At Schubas you can get front row without too much effort for most shows. At Empty Bottle I have never been more than 10 feet from the band (of course it's a band you've never heard of).

I'm also a big fan of The Troubador and its very intimate size. If a band that you love is playing there make sure you score some tickets.

The 9:30 Club in DC should be added to this list. That place is awesome...not too big, not too small...with a great view of the stage from anywhere in the club. They bring some of the best bands, musicians, and artists into a small setting so every view is pretty close to the stage. Seen some great shows there including the Black Crowes, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and the Beastie Boys.

Paradiso is my favorite. Great venue. Intimate spot that draws some big name performers. I saw Adele there earlier this year. She was incredible!

I really love The Roxy and The Whisky - I have probably been to both of those spots more than any others in LA. The Key Club isn't bad either.

The Troubador is by far my favorite venue. Unfortunately the last show I saw there was The Mooney Suzuki - the lead pretended to pass out on stage then climbed the rafters and rocked out for another hour. Awesome show!
