The Diverse World of European Film Festivals

Feb 22, 2013 —  European film festivals are indicators of what’s to come in the world of international film. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest international film festival and has shown the world innovative independent flicks since 1932. Not to be outdone, Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival) has handed out awards to the likes of Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia), who were relative unknowns at the time.

Similar to Berlinale, Cannes Film Festival has awarded its fair share of up-and-comers, like Quentin Tarantino for Pulp Fiction. However, Cannes differs from Berlinale – and other film festivals in the Old World – due to its beautiful coastline and beaches, which serve as a nice off-screen changeup for festivalgoers.

Film purists – who couldn’t care less about the beach – might be more likely to head to 50 Days of International Cinema in Florence with 50,000 other cinephiles or to the BFI London Film Festival, which screens nearly 300 total features, documentaries, and shorts.

Industry professionals, vacationers, and avid indie film fans can all find a European film festival to fit their respective tastes, whether they’re looking for the next big director or just a place to get a nice tan.
