Where Do You Do Your Shopping?

La Boqueria in Barcelona.

La Boqueria in Barcelona.

Aug 1, 2012 —  Hearing the words vendors, ultra fresh, free-range, homemade, and vintage can help conjure up images of the most incredible open air markets in existence. Either as a native or a sightseer, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than with a trip to that nearby market.

With each area maintaining its own form of distinctiveness, there’s a built in guarantee that surveyors will end up as consumers. From raw honey and exotic textiles to heirloom tomatoes and handmade leather belts, market offerings certainly run the gamut. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when you find yourself marinating on the thought of buying that vintage sputnik chandelier or pondering the logistics of transporting a 1,000 pound reclaimed wood door to your pint-sized studio apartment (your dinner parties will never be the same).

So when you need to start looking for hydroponic cucumbers, artisan cheeses, and gigantic slabs of Brazilian wood, check out our list of great markets around the world. Choose wisely, bring some cash…and maybe rent a U-Haul…you just never know.

Lauren Altman Aug 2, 2012 That picture of La Boqueria basically transports you...After diving into those candy bins, make sure you try the Paella!
Danny Milner Aug 2, 2012 Do they still have a market at the Farmer's Market? I feel like they have one or two fruit stands and everything else is one big cafeteria.
akiley Aug 2, 2012 I like the Farmer's Market at the Grove because there is a lot of variety. Plus, you can get your retail fix or maybe catch a movie afterwards. There are so many others to choose from in LA, depending on where you live, from Santa Monica to Brentwood to Studio City.
Sam Altman Aug 1, 2012 La Boqueria is possibly the best market in the world! I could spend hours in there. Great place to grab food before heading to the beach. Keep in mind that it is closed on Sundays and the best stuff is typically gone later in the day.
Victor Hernández Aug 1, 2012 Los Angeles needs to step their game up on this one. Thanks for the comment Paul. Now I don't have to book a flight or plan a vacation to visit a worthy market.
Paul Feinstein Aug 1, 2012 Can't believe there's nothing on Los Angeles in this one. Although there's a really cool night market coming up on August 10th. It's an Asian Street Food market that's taking over LA Live.
