Party Earth Westergasfabriek Review

Westergasfabriek is a former gas plant outside the city center whose old towers, warehouses, storage buildings, and grounds now house a collection of bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, and a vibrant cultural park.

During the day, the lovely terrain – known as Westerpark – offers plenty of green space for Frisbee throwing, football, kite flying, picnics, and barbecues, and the surrounding stores, galleries, bars, cafés, and restaurants provide plenty of things to see and do.

At night, a movie theater attracts an early evening crowd, while various clubs offer late-night party options.

From Thursday to Saturday, FlexBar – a small club shrouded in darkness and disco lights – presents solid electronic music for a hipster crowd. Another popular option is Pacific Parc, which is a large indoor/outdoor restaurant by day whose modern jungle décor turns into the perfect setting for a laid-back bar/club scene at night.

And on the west edge of the park is Westerunie with its grand covered terrace for daytime dining and upscale modern club featuring international DJs and all-night parties.

Overall, the crowd at Westergasfabriek is a melting pot of people, and the scene in this park setting is much more relaxed than city clubbing.

Tip from Emma:

Outdoor concert festivals are a common event at Westerpark. Check the website to see if you can catch big acts like Radiohead, Lenny Kravitz, or Madness – and instead of shelling out €60, just hang out in the park and listen with the other clever music fans.

  • Crowd

All types of all ages during the day, late teens and up at night.

  • Entertainment / Music

Events are held year round in the various halls and centers, from reggae festivals and concerts to urban art events.

FlexBar offers a trippier atmosphere with music from acid house and drum and bass to afro beats and reggae-influenced dub music.

Pacific Parc plays popular disco from the 70s to the present. Westerunie is a mixed bag of music, from Latin nights to raw rhythm to hard electro.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Coffeehouses and a bakery serve sweets and hot drinks, while the larger cafés and restaurants offer a wider variety.

Pacific Parc offers garlic shrimp with fries and marinated meats and veggies from the grill.

Westerunie serves dishes like ratatouille with tomato and basil sauce and lemon-parsley risotto with fennel and asparagus.

  • Prices

Prices are similar in all cafés. Appetizers €3.50–€6, entrées €4.50–€16. Beer €2+, wine €2.70, mixed drinks €6.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

    Casual.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Thursday through Saturday nights are the best bet as clubs host a number of events and parties both inside and out (depending on the season).

Summer Loving

This is the place to be in the Westerpark neighbourhood. Make sure to check out the market on the first Sunday of every month offering fresh food for the internationally inclined taste-buds and then soak up the sun with a flute of champagne. Festivals roll through here quite often, and are either free or reasonably priced- don't forget to check out the Rollende Keukens in May. Did I mention there's free wifi throughout the entire complex? So grab some friends, a bottle of wine, and go hang out in the sun, you'll fit right in.
A great hangout during the day, fantastic times at night

The first time I was ever at the Westergasfabriek was for a Goldfish concert at the Gashouder, and the whole thing blew me away. It's easy to get to, well planned out, and nice to have a look at if you're architecturally inclined. It's a great place to hang out and organise barbecues, and inevitably the area draws the young, trendy and outgoing crowds. As far as the live music events are concerned, it's a venue that I can do nothing but recommend. The concerts I attended were impeccably organised, and (forgive the cliche), an experience for all the sense. Lights, sounds and excellent bar service have contributed to many great late nights in the past and quite likely many more to come.

I hang out in this area all the time, mostly because the majority of my friends live around Westerpark and Jordaan. So whenever we BBQ or hang in a park, it's Westerpark. Which is cool with me, it's got a great vibe, free public bathrooms, and a huge field with shaded areas as well. We can hang there all day, and when it gets dark we go to Pacific Parc for have a few more drinks. And by that time we're pretty happy, as is the rest of the crowd, and weird things happen like meeting old sailors and watching your friends who can't dance really tear up the dance floor at Pacific Parc. =)
