Perched on a mound of sand on the edge of Ijburg – Amsterdam’s newest neighborhood and home to the city’s latest man-made beach – Blijburg is a popular hotspot for young city dwellers in search of a nearby oasis for sunbathing and partying.

The beach itself overlooks expansive canals and lagoons that seep into the North Sea, and the cabana-like bar and café adds a welcome tropical touch to this otherwise urban setting.

The bar/café on Blijburg Beach, which offers a spacious patio with both covered and open areas that attract a fun-loving crowd during the summer, features a rustic, candlelit décor punctuated by beads and tassels dangling from cushions, tapestries, and door frames.

The beach area consists of a small stage for live music and plenty of beach umbrellas, tables, comfy chairs, and beanbags, as well as various stands that sell drinks and snacks.

The lively atmosphere is helped along by the lighthearted and easily approachable guests who come to bask in the sun with a cocktail, play volleyball in the water, or watch the scene from their anchored boats nearby.

With its easygoing attitude, good food, and laid-back environment, Blijburg offers a friendly setting for locals, city folk, visitors, and everyone in between.

Tip from Emma:

This place is a sea of people all day and night in the summer. The good thing is that since this is an ‘urban’ beach, you don’t have to worry about staying late – finding a tram back to the city center is not a problem.

Blijburg is located in the new 'Ijburg'area, and I adore Blijburg, for its easygoing, inviting, down-to-eath-simple appearance. There is not much going on and it's about the simplicity. A few walls with graffiti, advertising stolichnaya vodka, and a row or buddha's making peace-signs. You have to love it. You can celebrate your party at the terrace or just at the man-made beach. You are free to do anything you want. if you feel hungry, prepare yourself to pay way to much than needed... But when you do: try the fries. They are organic/biologically delicious. Blijburg is accecible throughout the year and I try to hang-out there for at least 3 or 4 times a year.

I hit up Blijburg at least twice a summer... but this year I went all the time because it's so close and convenient. When it's super hot and sticky outside it's the fastest alternative to the beach (sometimes riding the train to Zandvoort is pretty uncomfortable). You just bike there, find a spot in the sand, and jump in that lake water and BOOM you're relieved from all your sweaty woes. The place is packed on weekends, and weekday afternoons are the total opposite with an empty beach besides a few families. Both times are good to go. It's seriously the best cure for a hot summer day in the city.
