Beaches in Amsterdam? That’s right. Not only are there great Amsterdam beaches outside of the city, but if you look closely enough, you’ll find ones right inside as well.
In an area in southeast Amsterdam called Ijburg, there’s a not-so-hidden oasis called Blijburg. Ijburg is one of Amsterdam’s newest neighborhoods and there’s nothing like bringing a new hood to bear than giving it a man-made beach. The beach itself looks over the canals and features a bar and café as well as a stage area for live music.
About a half an hour west of the city, hugging the coast of the North Sea, is an area called Bloemendaal. This beach enclave supports two great beaches: Bloemendaal aan Zee and Zandvoort aan Zee. Bloemendaal is the more youthful and active of the two with a reputation for surfing during the day and clubbing at night. Zandvoort is by no means a lazy area though and also has good waves for surfing and soft sand for volleyball. There is also a good amount of bars and cafés along the beach so it’s easy to make a full day of lounging in the sun.
Although the water is cold and the summers are relatively short, when the sun is shining its brightest and the temperature rises to sun-tanning levels, the beaches get filled to the brim with countless sun-starved Amsterdam denizens looking to shake the winter doldrums.
