Olympisch Stadion Information

The Olympisch Stadion served as the main venue for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. Currently listed as a national monument, the stadium has gone through a number of transformations including extensive renovation in 2000.

Programs at the Olympisch Stadion range from various sporting events and music concerts to royal functions (Queen Juliana was welcomed into the Olympisch Stadion as the new sovereign).

Notable past events at the Olympisch Stadion include Pink Floyd’s legendary performance in 1972, the European Cup Final in 1962, and the first memorial for World War II.

In addition, the Dutch national football team and association football club AFC Ajax both played numerous important matches at the Olympisch Stadion.

Since 2005, the Olympisch Stadion has also housed the Olympic Experience museum, an interactive multimedia exhibition showcasing Dutch sports.

Closed for construction, but the area is alright

While I was in Amsterdam, I infrequently walked past the massive Olympisch Stadion, but I was never able to actually go inside. The arena (and the surrounding area) seems to be in a permanent state of construction, but there are a few cool things here. First, Vrije Universiteit (or VU) is within walking distance (probably a 15 or 20 minute walk along Amstelveenweg), and the campus is beautiful. Plus, it's got a decent hangout spot for students and young people in the area at The Basket, and there is a Turkish pizza vendor that seems to always be open, located right by the transit stop at De Boelelaan/VU, and it's incredibly cheap. Closer to the Olympisch Stadion, there are a number of small food spots, and one in particular that is really good (and really cheap) called Deli Social that makes three-course meals for less than 15 euros. So if you're down towards neighboring Amstelveen you should hit that up.
