Jordaan, Amsterdam –
Gespot (Spotted) may be popular for its posh atmosphere, but it owes its real fame to the extraordinary and unconventional cocktails served at the downstairs bar.
Inventive offerings such as the Asian Mary with wasabi and soy sauce and the Thai Basil Sin with basil and apple juice are created nightly by some of Amsterdam’s finest bartenders, many of whom belong to an elite crew of drink pros called The Fabulous Shaker Boys.
The wraparound banquettes in the simple and sleek bar area help create a stylish lounge vibe, but since the space is small, the young professional crowd often tumbles out to the canal-side terrace.
Just as impressive as the cocktail menu is the upstairs restaurant, an elegant and upscale beauty featuring chocolate leather banquettes and white-tablecloth service, as well as an eclectic menu, impressive coffee drinks, and top-shelf liquors in a romantic candlelit environment.
Easygoing and with an affluent yet sociable clientele, Gespot is a chic neighborhood hangout for true cocktail lovers.
Young professionals and Jordaan residents, friendly and casual, 20s to 30s.
Mostly R&B hits, with a few soul and funk tracks.
Excellent bar snacks include dim sum, oysters, and sashimi, while the restaurant menu features marinated veal, soft-shell crab, and sushi of the day.
Bar snacks €6–€8, appetizers €8, entrées €15–€20. Beer €2.50, wine €3.70, cocktails €8.50, mixed drinks €7.
Casual to smart casual.
Friday nights after 11pm are best for catching a lively bar crowd.
