Amsterdam - Party Climate

Despite its colorful and often tawdry reputation as a hedonistic playground, Amsterdam offers so much more than coffeeshops and the Red Light District. For locals, in fact, those are far more tourist attractions than a daily part of their own list of things to do.

The city’s vibrant scene of hip bars, cozy pubs, chic lounges, underground live music venues, international restaurants, and top-notch clubs is far more inviting anyway. Nightlife in Amsterdam is also rich with concerts and theater, to say nothing of the countless museums and the incredible shopping that can easily fill an entire day.

Yet with all this, the city remains intimate and friendly because it is so easy to get around: The metro system makes traveling between neighborhoods a cinch, and bicycles are almost everyone’s main source of transportation.

“Amsterdam is a beer-drinking city where an infinite selection of old and new bars dole out local and regional brews for their thirsty patrons. Brown bars and pubs dominate the scene and provide a setting where people are clearly into partying, pub crawling, and indulging in endless rounds of beer. This is especially true during any big match, when fans down pint after pint with the hooligans from near and far that run amok in the Red Light District, or with fellow enthusiasts at one of the many sports bars that line Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein. In good weather, the beaches west of the city provide a carefree atmosphere full of action on and off the sand, including daytime beach and water sports and late-night parties sure to create (or cure) a hangover.”

“While it may not be the most cosmopolitan city in the world, Amsterdam has its share of luxury in the form of a number of posh clubs, sleek cocktail lounges, and swanky wine bars. A handful of clubs deliver an upscale atmosphere, with grand mezzanines and dance floors filled with sexy, sharply-dressed patrons. The city also has a lovely daytime scene where people lounge and linger at the sea of outdoor cafés to enjoy an afternoon of drinks in the sun. And not all of the coffeeshops have that old hippie feel – quite a few of them are spruced-up lounges with contemporary design and a classy vibe that attract a more stylish clientele.”

“Amsterdam has possibly the most casual, carefree vibe on the continent, which is quite amazing considering its incredibly active and never-ending party atmosphere. The city’s live music scene is truly off the charts and offers all kinds of performances – from rock, techno, and hip-hop to reggae, jazz, and beyond – at venues ranging from tiny basement spaces to huge arenas. The city also has a number of edgy, alternative dive bars that attract unusual, free-thinking characters who are always up for a good conversation over a smoke and a beer. And of course, the coffeeshop culture offers a great way to meet an international mix of like-minded people and to relax in a variety of unique environments, whether you settle into a comfortable corner on a rainy afternoon or join the crowds on a sun-filled terrace.”

“Amsterdam has an incredibly lively and vibrant character. By day, the city buzzes with people who swarm to the outdoor markets in the mornings before heading to the parks for long, sunny afternoons with friends on the open green. Warm-weather weekends find the café terraces overflowing with beer-sipping patrons who settle in for hours of people-watching. In fact, often the only motive to grab the bill is when a friend boats by offering an afternoon of canal cruising with good company and a few bottles of wine. By night, Amsterdam offers a number of clubs and bars, many of which are owned by young trendsetters whose colorful originality attracts an equally mod clientele. These venues thrive on artistic freedom, which is apparent in their funky music, stylishly urban décor, and clever theme and activity nights that keep the hip patrons coming back for more.”
