Desmet Studio’s is a small but high-tech television and radio studio that has given over Thursday nights to Amsterdam’s popular radio station 3VOOR12, which hosts free live music for a select group of in-the-know music fans.
Just down the hall from the entrance is an intimate 300-person venue where bands like The Shins, The Kooks, and Radiohead have performed secret sessions for a lucky few.
The impressive audio and visual equipment offers enough power to rival that of a rock arena, and a collection of pro video cameras reel around the walls as colorful stage lighting bounces in sync with the music.
A bar and lounge area occupies the front room, so the crowd of fans and music industry types can duck in and out between sets to freshen their drinks or grab a snack. The scarlet walls hold flat-screen TVs that relay the action from the stage, while a DJ spins radio hits in the back behind a collage of music posters.
For those who know about it, Desmet is the best option for a high-spirited and unusual Thursday night out.

You have to sign up to get into Desmet on Thursdays, but it only takes a minute to register online at 3VOOR12’s website. Click on ‘Inloggen’ on the top left of the home page. Once you can sign in, click the tab that says ‘3VOOR12 Gastenlijst’ on the bottom right of 3VOOR12’s main page. Then just type your name on the online guest list, add a plus one, and you’re all set!

The usual lineup consists of three bands, each playing a 30-minute set. Bands vary from well-known acts to up-andcoming artists. Also visible from the performance room is the radio broadcast booth where the DJ – one of the most famous in the country – spins familiar hits live on a national radio station.
