Matt PennerMar 11, 2013If you become over-stimulated too easily, steer clear of the Leidseplein. It is one of the busiest squares in all of Amsterdam. This transport hub sits at the southern end of the city’s central canal ring, making it one of the most convenient and optimal meeting points in all of Amsterdam.
If you’re into people watching this square is second to none. It is constantly overflowing with street performers, merchants, trams, locals, and tourists. Also, an abundance of shops, restaurants, clubs, theatres, bars, and cafes overwhelm you with choice. Grab a seat at one of the sidewalk cafes, sip on a beer or coffee, and relax while watching this diverse crowd interact.
Visit The Bulldog Palace, a cop-shop turned coffee shop and then head next door to curve your munchies at the Pancake Corner. And if you’re an American who has grown homesick and craves a taste of home, there’s a Burger King conveniently located right across the street.
If somehow all of this isn’t enough to keep you entertained, you’re in luck; there’s plenty of additional entertainment immediately surrounding the Leidseplain. Rent a bike around the corner at MacBike. The rates are extremely reasonable (€ 9.50/day) and there’s no better way to see the city. Vondel Park, The Museumplein, and The Heineken Experience are all just a short pedal away.
