Nieuwe Zijds, Amsterdam –
Long before its fame for its part in the film Ocean’s 12 – a scene that is continuously looped on the bar’s flat-screen TVs – De Dampkring was well known for its trippy, hippie Indian vibe and fine list of weed and hash.
Swirls of earthy tones and vibrant gold trim adorn the dark wood bar, glossy inlaid tables, and sunset-colored lamps, while elegant carvings twist around hand-painted furnishings to create a unique environment with plenty of character.
De Dampkring’s groovy look and top-quality products have made it a standout in the Amsterdam coffeeshop scene, as have its multiple Cannabis Cup Award wins. Customer satisfaction is high on the list of priorities here, where the open staff allows patrons to inspect before they buy.
De Dampkring offers a laid-back scene with a mellow vibe that customers – much like the resident cat sprawled lazily in the window – can easily sink into with a cup of tea and some sensi.
The usual mix of regulars, cannabis buffs, and curious tourists.
Hip beats mixed with a bit of house and fun remixes.
Cannabis Cup winners include Rifman’s Habibi hash, Water Works Nederhash, Silver Haze, and Ceres Hilton marijuana.
De Dampkring’s official headshop and growshop is just across Centraal Station at Prins Hendrikkade 10-11, where a variety of pipes, bongs, vaporizers, and hash-making kits are for sale.
Weed €7.50–€14/gram, hash €8–€60/gram. Coffee and herbal teas €2.
Casual.
Anytime, but makes a great escape on rainy days.
Up the street is Vlaamse Fritehuis (Voetboogstraat 33) known for having the best frites (fries) in the city, served with a choice of gourmet sauces.
