Party Earth Barney's Coffeeshop Review

The Scene

For over twenty years, the small but hip Barney's Coffeeshop has offered a welcoming bohemian feel and remains a genuine staple of Amsterdam's smoking culture.

For over twenty years, the small but hip Barney’s Coffeeshop has offered a welcoming bohemian feel and remains a genuine staple of Amsterdam’s smoking culture.

The vintage wood trim and smiling sun logo invite patrons in, where they find a rustic tavern with a rather exotic décor featuring golden yellow walls with brick patches, smooth carvings and ornately-painted wooden tables, emerald and crimson counters, and a collection of souvenirs from Southeast Asia.

Customers slouch contentedly on wooden benches and chairs to take a breather from the busy streets, chill in an easygoing environment, and of course sample the high-quality marijuana.

Winner of many Cannabis Cups for its rare strain selections of weed and hash, Barney’s enjoys a solid reputation for offering reliable products in a sociable and open-minded atmosphere.

The coffeeshop’s philosophy and ambiance attracts a laid-back clientele of hippies, while the sometimes overworked staff is always friendly, approachable, and ready to offer suggestions.

Since its original concept as a coffeeshop and seed supplier, Barney’s has expanded into a diverse chain of establishments, most located on the same block and all worth an extended visit of their own.

Top Shelf Product, Bottom Shelf Service

Heading to Amsterdam for the first time I had been recommended to go to Barney's by a few people. It is very close to the center hub of transport and in a nice neighborhood with plenty of bakeries and delis to check out after. Barney's product was very good, probably the best I found during my short stay in Amsterdam, however you definitely pay for the quality (€15/gram). Probably the best feature they offer is Volcano vaporizers at each table that give a very nice experience. Still, the lady that runs the place is not friendly to tourists (although from what I could tell those are the only customers Barney's really gets); and she freaked out on me when I foolishly ate some truffles in a public way. I appreciate that she doesn't want any "tripping" people in her store, but as I pointed out: she was the only one "trippin." While Barney's does have some good qualities, there are dozens of other more friendly and relaxed Coffee Shops I would advise over Barney's.
When in Rome? When in Amsterdam!

A regular tourist attraction, you won't find too many locals basking in the 'ambiance' of Barney's. If you're like me and love to talk to the locals and try and understand their experiences and way of life I would DEFINITELY steer clear of Barney's. Although if you're with your small clique of friends and like bumping into your travelling counterparts, pop in for a smoke and a chat - also relax and enjoy the many, many...MANY (I can't stress this enough) 'greeners' that are imminent in a popular tourist coffee shop like this. Let's hope your not one of them! Giggles will be plenty - but this great city has so much more to offer!
The best coffee shops are the quiet ones were people play a bit of backgammon and chess.

I liked the choice of smoke, but being carded at the door takes a little joy away for me personally. I love the coffee shops in this city, but the quiet ones out of the way are much better than the big tourist ones. Though it is entertaining watching a whole group of tourists come in, order the strongest weed, and then turn into silent mumbling green zombies! Enjoy your joint, but don't be greedy! Though it has a big reputation, it isn't one I would prefer to visit.
Lost its cool

I don't know why Barney's is such a hit actually, I think it's one of those coffeeshops that's been written about so many times in guidebooks people just think they HAVE to get there. I'll admit it's been around for a while, and before they remodeled it there was a reliable hippie vibe to the place, but that's all changed now and things don't really feel the same. Plus they're one of the few coffeeshops that card people right at the door, which is unusual, and kind of kills the buzz or makes people feel more uncomfortable.
