A spiritual, earthy, and mildly psychedelic motif distinguishes Abraxas from other coffeeshops, and the interior of this three-story 17th-century building is one of the most beautiful in town.

Hand-carved wood, incredible paintings of the night sky, and finely crafted colorful mosaics offer plenty of visual stimulation to enhance the experience.

Adding to the laidback vibe is the friendly staff, always ready to help regulars and guests alike with their selections from the display of herbal offerings, and to make them feel welcome at the long and intricately-painted coffee bar.

For patrons who want a little privacy or down time, spiral staircases lead up to peaceful corners where guests can sink into the wraparound couches or play a game on the chessboard tables.

The overall feel is a comforting mix of relaxation and openness, which makes Abraxas a popular hangout for many smokers.

Tip from Emma:

Don’t just settle down on the first floor – the upstairs lounge area is more unique in its design, and there’s a great street view of lovely Dutch architecture.

A Local's Favourite..

After it being recommended by a local as 'the best coffee shop in Amsterdam', I must admit my expectations were HIGH, yet Abraxas fulfilled that expectation...and then some! The friendly staff and the laid back atmosphere of the café makes even the most naive of smoker or tourist feel at home and with the unique décor of the place, it's definitely worth a visit.
Place Luxembourg

I like very much Place Luxembourg in Brussels. There are a lot of people drinking beer every afteernoon and it is extremely easy to socialize and to change contacts.
ABRAXAS IS DEFINETELY THE BEST COFFEE SHOP IN AMSTERDAM THAT WELCOMES EVERYBODY

ABRAXAS was the very first place I've checked out in Amsterdam my very first time there and it became the must-go every time and must-see for everybody. Sometimes Coffee Shops in Amsterdam might seem unwelcoming or unfriendly when it come to tourists cause you might feel judge or not welcome enough when they see you're just there for the weed and you don't know how to behave under the Dutch Laws and Regulations. There are a lot of coffee shops in and outside of Amsterdam, especially, that will make your first 10-15 minutes hell, before they go over all the new and old bureaucracy that the Dutch Law requires from a foreigner in a coffee Shop. Abraxas, different from everybody else, is extremely international oriented, foreigners extremely friendly, they all speak many different languages and they love taking the time and explaining you everything that they have on the menu and how it works and it will affect you. It is the only place in Amsterdam that combines the most friendly stuff, no bureaucracy hassle, EXTREMELY HIGH-QUALITY products, ( best in all Holland, in my opinion) and chill-out-relaxed atmosphere in an upscale environment without giving you the feeling in being in a coffee shop, it rather feels like a great UPSCALE- LOUNGE. The best part of Abraxas its the location, there used to be 2 Abraxas coffee shops in Amsterdam, I don't know if both of them are still there but my favorite one is next to the Central Station, in an extremely narrow alley that more than 2 people cannot fit together in this tiny" street". If you sit upstairs you can admire the opposite side building of Abraxas which is a " private- members only" club, which creates Abraxas an even more intrigued and mysterious place where to spend your wonderful time in Amsterdam.

Legit

Seemed like one of the more legitimate coffee shops in Amsterdam even though its right in the center of Amsterdam. Awesome vibes, kind of decorated in a tree house sort of vibe. The staff is SUPER helpful and nice. I dropped my jacket and an employee actually chased me down the street to return it. Good music choice as well with laid back songs( biggie and tupac, what else can you ask for). Definitely would check this place out because its less overwhelming than the really touristy places. If you just want to relax this is the spot to be!
A good intro

I'd say it's one of the few legit coffeeshops in the central part of Amsterdam. Especially in the area behind the palace. Decent selection, decent crowd and staff. Light years ahead in coolness compared to Bulldog. My friends complain about the small stools. But they're big guys. If you're a small American girl like my friend you'll have no problem ;) I wouldn't come here for the bud. But I like to bring my friends visiting Amsterdam here just to show them what a real coffeeshop experience is like. Just like I would Greenhouse or Grey Area. But this place is about location. And that's solid.
