Originally a combination coffeeshop and bar, Nes Café eventually dropped the cannabis side of its business to comply with changes to Dutch law, but is still a smoker-friendly bar for pool sharks, coffeeshop employees, and everyone in between who enjoys drinking cheap beer in a welcome watering hole.

Other than the large pool table that dominates the space, the bar features minimal décor, obviously preferring to place the focus on its serious pool playing and its special collection of draft beers, including the hard-to-find local Gulpener brew.

While the regulars do take their games to heart, the diverse clientele is generally chatty and ready to rack up a game and watch some sports. An open area at the front, meanwhile, now serves as the dedicated smoking zone, with a vaporizer available for guests who bring in their own kush.

Pool tournaments on Thursdays and Sundays are a great way to catch some seriously skilled locals clearing the table, but any day at Nes Café promises a relaxed vibe and a chance to meet chill folks from all over the world.

Tip from Jonah:

If you want to take on the local pool sharks, write your name on the chalkboard and wait for your turn. When you’re up, drop fifty cents in the hanging bucket and give it your best shot. You might want to double check the rules of the game first, as they may differ from what you’re used to.

The one and only true dive bar on the Nes

I forget when I first came to Nes, but it's really a reliable spot in the downtown center of Amsterdam. Good place for a smoke, a joke a drink, whatever you fancy... never demanding and always an interesting crowd. Last time I showed up there I edited someone's resume with a black permanent marker and the next day I got called in to scribble on a publication. They never wanted me back of course, but I respected the incentive and sporadic confidence laid upon me from a solid night at Nes! My one tip is to sit as close to the alley as you can -- the covered outdoor spots are the best.
good dive!

I come to Nes when everyone else is there, but it's always a good time and atmosphere! This is the best version for a dive bar in Amsterdam because it's kind of dumpy but not too bad, and the neon lights are cool, it's smoker friendly for joints, and the people who go there are locals but foreigners. When things get late the pool table is for experienced pool sharks! If you think you have got what it takes got for it! Anyway it doesn't matter, and when things close down you just walk a few meters and party on at Buurvrouw!
