Originally a combination coffeeshop and bar, Nes Café eventually dropped the cannabis side of its business to comply with changes to Dutch law, but is still a smoker-friendly bar for pool sharks, coffeeshop employees, and everyone in between who enjoys drinking cheap beer in a welcome watering hole.
Other than the large pool table that dominates the space, the bar features minimal décor, obviously preferring to place the focus on its serious pool playing and its special collection of draft beers, including the hard-to-find local Gulpener brew.
While the regulars do take their games to heart, the diverse clientele is generally chatty and ready to rack up a game and watch some sports. An open area at the front, meanwhile, now serves as the dedicated smoking zone, with a vaporizer available for guests who bring in their own kush.
Pool tournaments on Thursdays and Sundays are a great way to catch some seriously skilled locals clearing the table, but any day at Nes Café promises a relaxed vibe and a chance to meet chill folks from all over the world.
If you want to take on the local pool sharks, write your name on the chalkboard and wait for your turn. When you’re up, drop fifty cents in the hanging bucket and give it your best shot. You might want to double check the rules of the game first, as they may differ from what you’re used to.
Expat regulars, alternative types, people in the marijuana industry, and curious travelers.
A mix of reggae, rock, soul, and guitar. Gaming options include one eight-foot Brunswick Gold Crown II pool table, an electronic slot machine, chess, and other board games. Free Internet access.
A “menu” of one hearty dish offered Thursday nights only. Vaporizers available, but guests must supply their own incendiaries.
Thursday menu €7+. Pool €0.50/game. Beer €2–€4, wine €3.50, mixed drinks €5.
Casual.
Friday and Saturday nights are lively, though pool tournaments bring in a fun crowd on Thursdays and Sundays.
De Buurvrouw, located around the corner, offers cheap beer, pool, and good music long after Nes Café closes for the night.
