Standing side-by-side on the periphery of Leidseplein, Weber, Kamer 401, and Lux are a trio of bars that may be similar in shape, style, and clientele, but each has a slight twist in character that sets it apart from the others.

The identical floor plans feature a long, narrow three-room design with the main bar on the left, an intimate lounge platform behind the bar, and a few steps up, a larger seating area with sleek sofas.

The décor at Weber tends toward a woodsy yet chic cabin feel, with elegant chandeliers illuminating the dark wood mantels and the trophy game mounted against the cool greens and rust oranges of the walls.

On the flip side, Kamer 401 aims to bring more disco to its vintage style by adding leopard prints, crushed velvet, and tassels to bar stools and couches as well as sexy, shiny bead dividers and flashy metal designs, while Lux goes for the cool and contemporary look with sheer curtains, plush lounge pillows, abstract designs, and oversized photos of models set against bold blue and red walls.

Regardless of the vibe and décor, any of the three venues is suitable for the talkative and somewhat upscale clientele that gathers to catch up with their trendy co-workers and fashionable friends.

Although there are three bars to handle the crowds, the trio always seems to burst at the seams with patrons sipping cocktails both inside and out on the streets – which turns out to be the best place to mingle as all three bar crowds blend together into a hip mini block party scene.

With a buzzing atmosphere and a carefree and pleasant mentality, Weber, Kamer 401, and Lux offer a lively sample of the modern Dutch bar scene.

Tip from Lucas:

The best time to go is after 9pm when the place is packed inside and out with good-looking locals and well-heeled visitors. This is also a good place to meet up with other pre-party people before hitting some of the nearby hotspots.

  • Crowd

A blend of musicians, actors, mod foreigners, and students, mid 20s and 30s+.

  • Entertainment / Music

All three cafés offer a similar music style of indie pop hits and upbeat electronic dance tunes. On weekends, Lux hosts live DJs who spin a mix of popular tracks from the underground independent scene.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Bar snacks include Dutch cheeses, sausages, and olive platters. Hotel Weber is located above the bars and offers studio rentals for weekends and week-long stays.

  • Prices

Bar snacks €5. Beer €2.40, wine €3.20, mixed drinks €6.70.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

    Casual to smart casual.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Wednesdays through Saturdays after work or later in the evenings.

My Take: Located in Leidseplein, a busy tourist area with lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs and things to do is Bar Lux, a popular local’s hangout and the chicest bar in Amsterdam. As you enter this upmarket bar you are greeted by a warm smile from the barman. The décor is as chic and stylish as the patrons. All the beauty is in the small details; the rustic walls, the pop art on display, the bronze chandeliers that hang above the bar and the pretty sofas in the sitting areas. The Scene: Bar Lux is known as a pre-club bar. Patrons start off their night at Lux for a few drinks before heading to the clubs in the area. Some end up staying at Lux the whole night because the drinks are good and inexpensive and the vibe is great. Creative people are known to hang out at Lux; writers, artists and designers fill this trendy spacious bar. Everybody is welcome at Lux although the manager likes to keep his clientele local to keep the bar authentic! Cocktails and Cuisine: There is no food served at Lux, only bar snacks. Two bars serve the thirsty patrons. The menu is basic and consists of beer, wine, whiskey, vodka, tequila, various liquors and non-alcoholic drinks. Prices: The prices are very budget friendly. You can drink at Lux the whole night and not break the bank! Beer: 2.60€-4.20€ Whiskey: 4.80€-5.80€ Tequila: 4.80€ Wine: 3.60€-9.50€ Snacks: 2.70€-6€ What to wear: Dress up. Shirts and proper shoes for men, dresses, jeans and heels for ladies. Insider Info/when to go: On weekends Lux gets VERY busy around 11pm, get there early to get a table.
Always a party vibe

I hear a lot of people say that the crowd here, the models and local actors and musicians and writers, are stuck up and stupid. But I disagree! I think this trio of bars is fun, and I've never felt out of the loop or whatever. It's just a fun, packed place to drink beers and be a little flirty. There isn't really much of a difference between the places, so just consider it all the same bar. Since these kind of buildings aren't allowed to remodel and tear down walls, they have to work with what they got since the 1600s. Definitely check it out when you're out in Leidseplein.
Not so special interchangeable bars

Let’s just say it is a convenient place to gather when meeting in Leidseplein. Though I liked the setting and parts of the décor of the bars, I was appalled by the lack of atmosphere. The music was generic and loud, making it difficult to enjoy conversation with my friends. Furthermore, I like laid back crowd better than the one I have seen when I visited Kamer 101 and Lux. This all seemed to me a bit pretentious and overrated. Of course, depending on what you are looking for, you might enjoy those three bars. Just make sure you dress up nice and bring along good looking friends.
