Dam Square, Amsterdam –
A local favorite for more than a decade, Schuim is a spacious, retro-styled café whose relaxed afternoon vibe transforms into a lively bar scene in the evening.
During the summer, the crowd congregates on the sidewalk to chat before heading inside to dance or lounge at the tables.
Low-hanging lamps cast a glow over the open room and illuminate the floral patterns and swirly colors of the vintage armchairs and sofas, as well as the drinks menu painted in large letters above the long bar. Rotating exhibits of works by local artists adorn the walls and vary from photography to oil paintings to murals.
By day, the laid-back vibe draws an eclectic group of artists, journalists, and poets in search of an inspiring atmosphere, while by night, DJs spin beats that bring in a larger crowd of alternative and sociable city dwellers looking to share a few beers with friends in a lively environment.
Freedom of expression is all the rage at smoker-friendly Schuim, so patrons shouldn’t be surprised by spontaneous tambourine playing or dancing on the tables – what matters is that the vibe is always inviting and the crowd always welcoming.
Carefree alternative and hippie types, 20s to 40s.
The DJs play a mix of electronic music Thursdays through Saturdays. Live bands on Mondays.
Gourmet salads and sandwiches served until 6pm.
Sandwiches €5.50, salads €7+. Beer €2, wine €3, mixed drinks €6.
Any time during the day for the café atmosphere, or Thursday through Saturday nights.
Bierkoning (Beer King) (Paleisstraat 125), a bottled beer shop offering almost a thousand different beers. It’s also one of the few places that provides keg rental services.
