Nieuwe Zijds, Amsterdam –
Housed in a 17th-century building, Harry’s Bar is a sleek and simple Spuistraat bar consisting of three small floors, each with its own pleasing ambiance.
The bar is located on the ground floor, an animated area great for people-watching. The second floor is a small perch above one end of the bar and provides a bird’s-eye view of the masterful drink making below. The third floor offers a lounge setting with leather couches and a view overlooking Spuistraat.
Throughout, bold prints of French pop art add a dash of color to the dark wood accents, beams, and winding staircase.
Of course, what the well-heeled clientele really comes for is the impressive cocktail menu, which includes a long list of classic martinis and inventive mixed drinks.
A patient and professional bar staff in crisp white dinner jackets takes excellent care of the patrons, who lounge at tables and on sofas to enjoy their perfect concoctions amid a soothing, intimate buzz of conversation.
Harry’s Bar is not affiliated with the famed Cipriani family and their upscale venue of the same name in Venice, Italy. However, the Harry’s Bar in Amsterdam also provides a sophisticated cocktail experience – especially on the third floor, where guests can sink into one of the comfy leather sofas or lounge chairs and enjoy a view of the city’s old and beautiful Dutch architecture.
Sophisticated and well-dressed, 30s and up.
Soft lounge music, a bit of jazz, or nothing at all.
Each cocktail comes with a small dish of nuts and crackers.
Beer €2.95, wine €4.20, cocktails €8.80, after-dinner cocktails €13.25.
Smart casual to dressy.
Fridays and Saturdays after 6pm.
Across Spuistraat to the left is Dante, a café and restaurant with a spacious people-watching terrace for summer and cozy interior for winter.
