This Dutch classic is Holland’s version of a college bar where really cheap drinks and a good location draw students from all across the city, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when Café Tapperij d’Oude Herbergh often plays host to college club borrels (parties). Most of the action takes place in the main room, which consists of a bar, a jukebox, and a few tables, although the back room opens for special student parties or when extra space is needed to hold the crowd. The bar’s nautical/antique theme is evident in the old kayaks hanging from the ceiling and the World War I propeller mounted against the bar, not to mention the vast collection of sailing artifacts and other treasures on display. The place may be old and dusty, and the only beer on tap is Grolsch, but no one seems to care. And despite its rambunctious crowd, the bar, family owned and operated since its establishment in 1926, still retains a wonderfully original and authentic atmosphere.

A nice journey back in time

Dutch schlager music is this folk genre of traditional songs most people from Holland sheepishly admit to knowing. Get 'em drunk and they'll belt out all the lyrics without blinking an eye. Tapperij had the LOOK of a schlager house, but I can't ever remember the tunes going too far. All the little odds and ends made up an interesting tale about the owners, and service catered to the younger college students that weren't so much into the dance club next door. It was a really cozy place with a central location. Don't know what happened, but just own the way is a new pool hall that has some great billiards... other than that the alley is still worth a looksee.
